re:fraction
re:fraction is a Swedish hardware dub techno project produced by
Gustav Sandstedt. The project explores the possibilities of dub techno
and combines elements of techno, dub, ambient, and minimal music,
focusing on the themes of physics, science, and technology.
Sandstedt has been producing music for over 10 years, but re:fraction
was created in 2021 as a musical journey to learn and experiment with
the dub techno genre. He has released a number of albums and EPs since
then, including Linear Perspective, Parallel Directions, Quantum
Mechanics, and Retroactive Structures.
The music consists of deep basslines, hypnotic rhythms, and lush
textures. He uses a variety of hardware synthesizers, drum machines,
and sound effects to create a sense of space and atmosphere in his
music. His tracks are often long and meditative, and they invite the
listener to immerse themselves into a hypnotic world of sounds.
The first two albums, “Linear Perspective” and “Parallel Directions,”
were released in 2022, both self-released through the “Sound-driven
society” label. In the first six months of 2023, he released the EPs
“Coastline Paradox,” “Harsh Dunes,” and “Dimension Curve.” In the same
period, he also released the single “Solid Matter” on Morbid Records
and the EP “Dimension of Velocity” on SPCLNCH, containing remixes by
Martin Jarl and Alexander Bogdanov.
In the last six months of 2023, re:fraction released three albums
through “Sound-driven society”: The 80 minutes journey “Quantum
Mechanics” in June, the retrospective album “Retroactive Structures”
on October 13, and “Angular Momentum” in late 2023. “Angular Momentum”
is a conceptual album that explores the themes of physics,
mathematics, and philosophy through music. It is a unique and
innovative work that showcases re:fraction’s creativity and talent.
